Eight years. One championship in the bubble. The all-time scoring record. A historic moment sharing the floor with his own son. And on Tuesday morning, hours before free agency officially opened, LeBron James told the Los Angeles Lakers it’s over. The longest tenure of his entire career has come to an end. And the entire basketball world is now watching where he goes next.
How It Went Down
Rich Paul — James’ longtime friend and agent — sat down with Lakers president Rob Pelinka on Tuesday morning before free agency began. That conversation ended with Paul informing the organisation that LeBron intends to sign elsewhere, officially closing the book on an eight year run in purple and gold.
The Lakers reportedly made it clear they wanted him back. LeBron decided his final chapter belongs somewhere else entirely.
One Final Season — Just Not In Los Angeles
This isn’t a retirement announcement. LeBron will continue his career into a record breaking 24th season — a number nobody in NBA history has ever reached. For years the speculation had been that he’d retire after 23 seasons, matching his own iconic jersey number and Michael Jordan’s. Instead, at 41 years old, he’s chasing one more chapter somewhere new.
The eight years in LA mark the longest he’s ever spent with a single franchise. A championship in the Orlando bubble during the pandemic. The all-time scoring record broken in a Lakers uniform. And arguably the most meaningful moment of his entire LA tenure — sharing the court with his son Bronny, the first father-son duo to ever play together in NBA history.
Why Golden State Suddenly Makes Sense
Here’s where things get genuinely fascinating. In the days leading into free agency, momentum has been building toward LeBron signing with the Golden State Warriors for considerably less money — pairing him with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green at the very end of his career.
This pairing has been a fantasy for Warriors fans for years, dating back to 2024 when owner Joe Lacob’s front office actually attempted to trade for him. Despite battling each other across four consecutive NBA Finals from 2015 to 2018 — with Curry’s Warriors winning three of those four championships — James and Golden State’s stars built a genuine bond over the years.
Green and James are close friends. Curry’s relationship with LeBron deepened significantly after the pair led Team USA to Olympic gold together in Paris in 2024 — with Curry famously knocking down four perimeter shots in the final minutes against Victor Wembanyama’s France to seal the win. The two superstars have openly dreamed about sharing a court together for years.
ClutchPoints reported Friday that Golden State “firmly believes” they are the frontrunners to land him — though it would require LeBron accepting a massive pay cut down to the team’s full mid-level exception.

The Competition Isn’t Done Yet
Golden State may be circling hardest, but they’re not the only suitors. Both the Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat — two franchises LeBron has already called home — have real interest in bringing him back for one final reunion.
Cleveland is where it all started. The “Kid from Akron” spent his first seven seasons there before the infamous Decision sent him to Miami in 2010. He returned four years later and delivered the most iconic moment of his career — leading Cleveland back from a 3-1 deficit in the 2016 NBA Finals against this very same Golden State team, becoming the first squad in history to complete that comeback.

A third stint in Cleveland would be the kind of storybook ending few athletes ever get to write for themselves.
What Happens To The Lakers Now
Los Angeles isn’t wasting any time either. The franchise is fully pivoting toward building around Luka Doncic, with new owner Mark Walter signalling aggressive intent in free agency. Austin Reaves has already re-signed on a four year, $185 million deal — the largest contract ever given to an undrafted player in NBA history — and the front office is expected to immediately target frontcourt reinforcements to surround their new franchise cornerstone.
The Decision Nobody Saw Coming
Will LeBron chase his fifth ring alongside Curry and Green in the Bay? Form a new Big Three with Bam Adebayo and Giannis Antetokounmpo in Miami? Or complete the full circle journey back to Cleveland for one final storybook run?
Free agency opens Tuesday at 6pm ET. The King has left the building in Los Angeles. Where he lands next could reshape the entire balance of power in the league. 🏀🔥
