Haaland Strikes Late — And Norway Survive A World Cup Scare Against Ivory Coast

For 85 minutes this looked like one of those evenly matched knockout battles that could have gone either way. Then the clock ticked toward the 86th minute and football reminded everyone of a simple truth — when you have Erling Haaland on your team, the game is never quite over.

Norway weren’t even playing particularly well. Haaland himself wasn’t having his best outing. None of that mattered in the end.

The Goal That Decided Everything

With the score locked at 1-1 and Ivory Coast arguably the better side for long stretches, Norway conjured a moment of brilliance out of nowhere. Substitute Oscar Bobb threaded an incredible pass into the box, finding Patrick Berg, who slipped a low cross across to Haaland lurking in the middle.

It wasn’t even a clean strike. Haaland took a heavy touch and the ball cannoned awkwardly off his foot — but in true poacher fashion it trickled agonisingly over the line anyway. 2-1 Norway. The kind of ugly, scrappy, completely decisive goal that separates genuine world class strikers from everyone else.

It Wasn’t Over Yet

Ivory Coast refused to go quietly. They kept pushing deep into stoppage time, forcing goalkeeper Orjan Nyland into a brilliant save off a dangerous free kick before a nervy corner followed soon after. Norway held their nerve through every second of it.

When the final whistle finally blew, the relief was obvious. Norway had just won their first ever Knockout Stage match in World Cup history.

Why This Moment Matters So Much

Haaland has spent years being one of the most devastating strikers on the planet at club level. International tournament football has always been the one stage where he hadn’t yet fully delivered for his country on the biggest occasion. Friday night changed that narrative in the most Haaland way possible — not through a moment of dazzling individual brilliance, but through pure instinct and being exactly where he needed to be when it mattered most.

Norway are through. History has been made. And Erling Haaland, even on an off night, found a way to be the difference once again. ⚽🔥
