Under the pressure of a pass rush, he tried to escape defensive end Carl Lawson and lost the ball on 2nd and 10, with the Broncos trailing 24-21. After the fumble, Jets cornerback Bryce Hall scooped up the ball to return it for a 39-yard touchdown.

Cameras quickly focused on Payton, capturing the moment he adjusted his microphone to pose a visibly agitated question to Wilson. A subsequent replay captured Wilson removing his helmet and turning to respond to Payton, although the exact content of their exchange remained challenging to discern.
