Mark Pope isn’t the type to sit back and wait. The 2026-27 Kentucky roster is barely even settled and already he’s out there hunting for the next generation of Wildcats. And his latest target? A four star point guard who, frankly, should probably be a five star.

Big Blue Nation, meet Jaxson Davis. Remember that name.
The Roster Is Set — But Pope Is Already Looking Ahead
Kentucky’s current squad is shaping up to be one of the most promising groups the program has seen under Pope’s watch. Five star forward Ryan Hampton already committed on Sunday, giving the 2027-28 recruiting class some serious early momentum.
And now Pope is swinging again. Davis made Kentucky’s offer public on his Instagram — and just like that the Wildcats are in the mix for one of the most exciting young playmakers in the entire 2027 class.
Illinois, Indiana and several other notable programs are also in the hunt. This one is going to get competitive very quickly.
So Who Exactly Is Jaxson Davis
Here’s the thing about Davis that makes this recruitment so interesting — his four star ranking genuinely undersells him. Ranked 53rd in the SC NEXT Top 60, the 6-foot, 165-pound point guard has been making serious noise since as far back as September last year.
The calling card is scoring. Davis has an incredibly deep offensive bag — a smooth jumper, elite shot making ability and the kind of downhill speed that reminds Kentucky fans of some of their greatest ever guards. And despite his slender frame he’s surprisingly physical in the paint too, which tells you everything about his competitive mentality.

He averaged 14.2 points and 5.2 assists per game across three Nike EYBL sessions. Those are numbers that demand attention regardless of what any ranking system says about him.
Why Kentucky Need Him So Badly
Last season taught Pope a painful lesson — without a reliable point guard everything else falls apart. The heart of any good basketball team runs through its floor general and Kentucky felt that absence more than most last year.
Zoom Diallo is back for his junior season which helps. But having genuine insurance and long term depth at the position is exactly the kind of forward thinking that separates good programs from great ones.
Davis and Hampton alongside each other in the same recruiting class? That’s not just promising — that’s the foundation of something genuinely special in Lexington.
The Bottom Line
Pope has Kentucky’s present looking brighter than it has in years. But the man is already building the future at the same time — and in Jaxson Davis he may have identified a generational piece that nobody else is quite appreciating yet.
Kentucky have the legacy, the fanbase and the platform to make a seriously compelling case here. Whether that’s enough to fend off Illinois, Indiana and the rest remains to be seen.
But one thing is certain — this recruitment is one to watch very, very closely. 🏀🔥
